How do oil and gas pipelines work? How does the fuel move through the line?

It’s a pressure system, using pressure the gas or oil is moved through the system, that’s why you cant have any leaks, otherwise you lose that pressure, and gas and or oil is pumped through the system properly. Also why you have an “Oil pressure” light or picture etc, on the dash, its moved by pressure, and the loss of pressure can lead to major problems.How do oil and gas pipelines work? a series of pumps and valves keep the oil and gas moving.. you have to have pressure to have movement.. the inside of the pipes are well lubricated

The right angle can flex slightly - like from 88 to 90 to 92 degrees and allow the pipeline to expand and contract with changes in temperature of the pipe.





Those changes can be from environmental conditions (ambient temperatures, solar input) and from temperature changes in the pumped fluids (heavy oils are heated whereas gasoline is not and many pipelines carry mulitple products sequentially).





Slight changes in length in a straight pipeline would causes huge deviation laterally. Consider a chain (like the ones that attach the pen to desk of the post office) a bit less than taut. You're talking about those zig-zags they put in the pipelines, and it's to provide flexibility along the length of the pipelines to allow for temperature-induced expansion-contraction. In fact, pipelines are not actually bolted solidly to the support foundations, so they can slide freely length-wise. Otherwise, damage to the pipes can occur.
Long runs of pipe have loops or ';U'; shaped additions that allow for expansion and contraction of the pipe.

Why in the world would you make easily transported coal into difficult to transport?


Coal is composed of some hard stuff (carbon) but also a lot of volatine fossil fuels - including methane, which is hte principal issue with mine safety, outside of collapse. The slurry you make would have to be mixed with an organic liquid, not water. And, you would experience incredible fouling in the pipes.


The reason coal is not used instead of crude oil is b/c of the sulfur content of coal. When coal is burned, the sulfur forms an acid anhydride - which means that when it is mixed with atmospheric moisture, it becomes battery acid, falls in canada, and kills everything. The federal regulations on ue of coal sets thresholds for permissible pollution from coal burning plants. Pollution control equipment is expensive, and adds to the cost of the energy, so the crude is more in demand. And, companies have to repair the land from which they get the coal, adding another cost to its use.


However, coal would never be able to replace gasoline, and never be usable for producing plastics and polymers that come from crude oil - and demand for those will remain high even if coal were substituted.


Go look up ethanol usage in South America, and you will realize how little our government has done to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. And remember how much money the government spends on getting rid of a raw material for ethanol (corn, though S. There would initially be the factor of abrasion to consider; oil is smooth, but even a fine coal powder would have a destructive effect on inner pipe walls.





Then there is its mass. Oil is less dense than water, while coal is heavier, thus the slurry would require more energy to pump from A to B.





The CURRENT retail value of coal is negligable compared to that of oil, but its transportation costs would in effect be greater.





Perhaps increased interest alternative energies will greatly reduce our dependence on fossil fuels before they run out, but this would depend on, amongst other reasons, AFFORDABILITY and Public Awareness ( ie people start to take the problem seriously.





In conclusion, i think it is possible if not feasible.

Ok where did you get the idea they ever would? and Iraq and Israel don't border each other and I'm pretty sure Syria and Jordan won't let it happen in our lifetime

    Anything that disrupts the delivery of oil will cause the prices to go up. Traditionally, if a commodity becomes scarcer, the price rises.     Terrorist attacts on oil pipelines and refineries might halt access to the supply of oil. Since the demand for oil is not going to go down, lower oil supply means higher prices.How might terrorist attacks on oil pipelines and other facilities drive up oil prices?
    reduction in supply drives up the price of what already is. extra money for more security.
    Anything that interferes with any major oil production will affect world pricing. It doesn't matter if it is a terrorist or weather or whatever.





    So pipeline problems or damage, refinery damage or closure, port facility damage etc.





    The world is using more oil today than ever before. The third world energy demands are rising every year. With current production capability we are limited in what is available for us to use.





    Unless we build new refineries and more storage and soon, we will not be able to handle any interruption of supply for very long.





    North America is in a decent position as we have enough local supply that we only rely on about 10% from overseas suppliers. If we ramp up production here and increase refining capability and storage capacity, then we can do away with reliance on any overseas suppliers.





    The problem is that everyone pays world pricing so even with that fact we would pay more than current. Hope you don't mind paying over $4.00 a gallon (in Europe they pay near $3.00/litre or near $10/gal).
