Russia is going after oil, while Democrats and some Republicans acting like Democrats are standing in the way of us drilling for our own oil. Oil companies are not the enemy. We need our own oil to remain a super power, most of what we Americans make/consume is derived from oil based products. This is not the old USSR, but they are using force to try to build their new empire. Russia wants to set up a puppet Government in Georgia, one that the Russians would actually control. That's what this is all about. The Russian economy is not weak as in the days of the Soviet Union, and Russia wants to make it's economy stronger by controlling oil that flows to Western Europe. More than just kicking Russia out of the G8 is needed. Rhetoric is not enough. Will other nations of the world(not just the US) be aggressive enough to stand up against Russia over this? Look, the oil investors knew the risks going in -- that the region is a geopolitical hotbed. Russia is no fool, they were asked to invest in the oil pipeline and they agreed but then later backed out. I would too if all I had to do is take control of Georgia instead. The pipeline is not in the disputed territory. The Russians and Georgians have both signed a cease-fire and the Russians say they will withdraw the troops from Georgia proper on Monday.

yes....i told ya the day it happened.the pipeline feeds europe.russia has been using natural gas and heating oil for ransom against former soviet satilites.now you understand why they keep taking sides on iran and did on iraq.russia has more energy reserves than saudi arabia.
There are two basic facts to keep in mind about the war in Ossetia:

I agree. I think we'll hear more about this pipeline in the coming months regardless of whether Russia withdraws or not. Also, they probably weren't too upset to have an opportunity to intimidate other former Soviet states.
That would be rather pointless as the pipe line that runs through Georgia is owned by Russia

As far as the whole Georgia situation, Obama suggest that we let UN handle the situation, that shows what an idiot he is. Since when did the UN solve anything, hope no one forget the massacre in Darfur. Did UN do anything? NOPE!! This country need a firm no nonsense government, a government that is more interested in serving the people of America instead of all the other countries that don't give a rat's @$$ about us. The finite resource of petroleum is not the answer to long term national energy security. The Oil Execs know it. For a real solution we need to perfect containment of spent fuel rods from Nuclear power plants and go to an electric powered economy.





The Nuclear Power Plants will of course need oversight. Accountants and high-level execs love to marginalize routine safety and maintenance issues in the quarterly budget. For proof of that look to the accidents at Texas Oil refineries bought up by British Petroleum. Control spent fuel rods should fall under high level military security in return for licenses to build these plants. No foreign contracters for this high level security work either.





Why hasn't this happened before? Big Oil wants us to stay addicted. Where are the geo metros of the 90's? They were too effecient, gone. The climate of war and fear keeps consumers in an agitated state susceptible to comforting commercials of happy families in oversize SUVs.





The ridiculous profits made by Oil Companies while my fellow rank and file Americans are in harms way in Iraq is PROFITEERING. War Profiteering is Treason.





The politics of Us vs them is the disease that greed thrives on. Is it the cause or the symptom of unmitigated greed? I don't know or care. I just want a better answer than continued oil-spills and airpollution. Liberals and Neo-cons need to get outside their little bubbles and find the win-win that will make it possible for the human race to continue to exist.





Nuclear power must be re-examined by critical thinkers. Without it we would not have a modern Navy. Technology is going to continue to require more energy and increase pollution from coal or gas powered power plants if we don't find a better source.





I will not list the plethora of negatives to off-shore drilling, the point is moot. The horse is dead, I reserve my mental energy for arguing a viable point.



Well of course it's over the pipe-line. They waited until the world's focus would be on the Olympics. They waited until George Bush's name was so destroyed in the rest of the world that it would hold no import. Who cares what ol Georgey says. We're indebted to the Chinese so we don't have a leg to stand on and Russia is in bed with the Chinese so they can build together the next super power. And they might just do it handily.
