Most oil is transported by ship because of the vast volume. Ships don't transport well on ice.Why was the alaskan pipeline necessary? why couldnt they transport the oil in other ways?
a) Energy demands from society. Security of supply.


b) Transportation costs per barrel - cheaper than other available means.

The pipeline is the most efficient way.
It's the cheapest way to do it.





That's usually the case when you see a big company doing something and you know they could do it another way. They're pretty smart about money.
I think it is the cheapest solution. There is only ONE road that goes there...and it is not much of a road, not drivable in the winter months. They would have to build more roads or a railroad track (that also would not be usable in the winter), or fly it out which would cost a lot, and there would be weight limits to how much a plane could carry. They could ship it in the summer, but once again not in the winter. The pipeline was the only way to have the oil be sent out all year round.
Now we have the internet, there is no excuse for you not doing your own homeworks.
The pipeline is the most environmentally friendly, and also cheapest, way to transport the oil. Just think, if the pipe could have been extended all the way to the lower 48 states, the Exxon Valdez spill would have been avoided.
What's wrong with it?





The pipeline corridor has been *VERY* beneficial to Alaskan wildlife. How do I know? I live here! The caribou and moose LOVE the pipeline corrider, especially where the line is buried. Due to the heat of the oil running through the line, the snow on top doesn't get very deep in comparison to the land around it.





It's not at all unusual to see bears, herds of caribou, moose, fox, wolves, etc near the pipeline - doesn't bother them one bit.

I mean, what other way? Trucks? Trains?


Just do some computation and you will see that you'd need more area covered with tracks or roads than with a pipeline.





Which does not mean that this specific oil was totally indispensable, that is another debate.
I think in the economic point of view pipeline is much safest %26amp;cheapest way to transport the oil from Alaska. Since most of the time the area is covered with ice not to mention the danger it would cause in transporting oil by other means.
